Turning Workshops

The Hollowing workshop started last Sunday – because of the interest in this workshop Phil will be looking at staging another one. – For those interested there is a sign-up list on the notice board.

Professional Demonstrations  –  The next professional Demonstration is on Saturday the 25^th of this month

This is an all-day demonstration by David Lowe RPT from Snainton woodturning. Amongst other things he will be demonstrating his signature piece “A Vase with a Zip in it” – Get tour tickets TONIGHT on sale at the shop. Please note bring your own sandwiches.

Andrew “The Hat Man” Hall will be with us on Saturday, 27^th May for an all day demonstration followed on the 28^th by a Master class.  There are 5 spaces on the Master Class (2 of which are already taken) If you would like to come to the master class please see me asap.

David Simpson is now looking at professional demonstrators for 2018, if there is anyone you would particularly like to see please let him know.

 Membership –  Some “members” have been somewhat slow in renewing their membership fees. Please note that if the membership fee is not paid by the December meeting then membership will be deemed as lapsed. This means that the person will not be allowed to use any club machinery at any time as they and the club will not be insured.

Funding Meeting – The decision has been taken by the committee to go ahead and begin erecting a ceiling over the club area. Costings have been done and we can just afford to do this, however this will leave us somewhat exposed should any unforeseen expenses arise. Because of this it was thought expedient to do some fund-raising.  It has been decided to call a fund-raising meeting of all members at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 21^st of this month. Please come along with as many ideas as possible – after all the ceiling is intended to keep YOU warm.

As we don’t have A meeting in January I thought it best to highlight some things that are coming up.

First off On Saturday 25^th February, there will be an all-day demonstration by David Lowe RPT from Snainton woodturning. Put the date in your diary now!

Amongst other things David will be demonstrating his signature piece “A   Vase with a Zip in it” –

Tickets on sale at the shop. Please note that sandwiches will not be available for lunch – please provide your own- however soup will be available.

On Saturday 27^th May we will be having a demonstration from Andrew Hall – those of you who went to Harrogate will no doubt remember Andrew.  Tickets for this will be on sale soon. However the following day, Sunday 28^th Andrew will be giving a masterclass where he will be teaching how to make a small hat. The cost for the day (given a maximum of 5 participants) will be £40 plus supplying your own wood.

Places for this course are already starting to be taken so book by email to me ASAP.

Just heard from Dave Biven that Jet and having a sale on their big lathes.

The 6520B lathe (the clubs main demo lathe) is on sale for £2190 while stocks last – normaly £2400 – £2500.

If you are interested in a new lathe then now is he time to buy.

Sarah has now finished the Beginners Course with a very nice bowl with a brass insert.

Any places still left on Phil Howard’s hollowing workshops?

I would like to try and turn thin and light bowls fresh Lime wood, and also use axe and adze to carve large oblong bread dough bowls from ‘green’ Lime.

Does anyone know of a Lime tree that the owner would be prepared to donate to me in return for a bowl, a few hours labour, or a small amount of cash?

I would prefer it to be within 40 minutes of Dumfries.

Last Teaching Session before Christmas and Sarah completes her Spindle Project – An Osolnik Candlestick with a brass inlay.       Well done Sarah.
