Recommended Safe Lathe Speeds

Speeds are shown in revolutions per minute (rpm).

The exact speed at which a blank can be spun safely depends on its density and balance. Blanks with uneven grain and density should be started at half these speeds. Always err on the side of caution, starting from near 0 rpm if you have a variable-speed lathe.
