Tuning a Platter or Plate (notes)

Wood blank about 280mm dia by 30mm (40mm if using tenon)

Mount on faceplate with short screws

  1. Bring wood to round and on the rim mark where to top of the plate will be.
  2. mark a line 8mm from the rim line just marked.
  3. Level up the bottom
  4. Decide on holding technique (recess or tenon) and form holding position.
  5. Mark the diameter of the base – as this is a plate or platter it needs to be bigger than the normal rule of thirds. In this case about 80% of the overall width. This will leave about 55mm for the outer edge.

6      Remove wood in a straight line from between the 2 lines (55mm line and 8mm line) – leave the lines don’t turn them away.

  1. Mark a line half way on this cut
  2. Create an ogee by cutting a slight concave on each side of the middle line.
  3. Shear cut a finish on the bottom then sand.

10     Reverse wood into jaws and clean the top surface down to the top line.

  1. Work out the width of the rim on this size about 30mm
  2. Begin to hollow but leaving enough wood to stabilise the cutting of the rim bead.

13     Work on the bead – true up the rim. Measure the rim thickness (should be about 5mm) Measure 5mm on the top edge of rim.

14     Start forming the bead – make a small v cut with the point of a skew at the 5m mark then using the skew as a scraper form the top of the bead then move the rest and finish rounding the bottom.  Tidy up the rim.

15     Continue hollowing to a thickness of about 5mm – Sand and finish

17     If using a tenon reverse the plate and remove the tenon – sand & finish.
