The 18(?) days of Christmas

Axminster tools have ‘Daily Deals’ for the first 18 days of Christmas (not 24 because of posting and delivery being too tight after the 18th)  so if you haven’t got yourself a Christmas present yet then there may be something to interest you here, at a bigger saving than Axminster’s usual reductions (which to be honest are often not that massive, although their standard prices are quite fair)

Click on the link below, or retype it into your search engine yourself.

Thanks Susan for reminding me about this.

Interactive Remote Demonstrations from Australia (again)

Here is another nice wee demo, and very topical at this time of year. A good quality demo and ideal for a cold and wet Saturday morning.

Thanks David for the reminder.

&

Saturday 5th December 9:30am (GMT)

Please click the banner above to download your personal RSVP invitation, for the next instalment of Live Sessions …a Free Educational Programme for Woodturning.

This week’s Live Session, aka ‘Interactive Remote Demonstrations’ (IRD’s) is brought to you direct from Theo Haralampou’s studio workshop in Brisbane Australia.

To learn more about Theo – CLICK HERE

In this session we are treated to one of Theo’s signature projects, which helps to demystify the complexities of ‘indexing’.

Theo walks us step-by-step through the marking out process, and demonstrates how to put the indexing features of your lathe or chuck to work. We learn how to make jigs for indexing and hole boring, and get deep into the techniques of fine spindle gouge control…..using a popsicle stick.

The result will be a beautiful hanging decoration that you can make for the festive season.

It really is rewarding for us to see so many familiar names and faces each week, and we encourage you all to bring along your woodworking friends and join our International Live Session communityall they need to do is send us an RSVP.

Please remember to let us know which country you will be joining us from with your RSVP.

This week, Theo covers:

• An introduction to indexing

• How to make an ‘interesting-boring’ jig

• Balance and proportion

• Fine spindle work with a popsicle stick

Please RSVP on the invitation form or simply send an email to miked@recordpower.co.uk with RSVP in the subject line to register, and you will be sent your Zoom log in code.

Please remember that your friends and fellow club members are welcome to join us too…all they need to do is send us an RSVP!

Accounts for 2019/2020

Our treasurer has completed the accounts for the previous year, and we are in a fairly good position to survive until the Covid situation has calmed down and it is safe for us to return. Obviously, with no meetings taking place, out income is less than our expenditure, but with careful management the future looks secure.

All members should have received an email with details of how to join the AGM via Zoom, let me know if you didn’t receive them, or need them again.

I post the draft accounts for your perusal prior to the AGM on the 8th December 2020.

Click on the line below to read them.

Draft Accounts 19-20

AGM 2020, 8th December.

This year is one best forgotten, or glossed over if possible, but there are some procedures that need to be dealt with, and the AGM is one of them.

Below is an extract of some relevant points from our constitution.

    • A Quorum of the Annual General Meeting shall be 25 per cent of the paid up membership to include at least two Officers.
    • The ordinary business to be transacted at each Annual General Meeting shall be:
      1. To receive and adopt the Chairman’s report of the previous years working.
      2. To receive and adopt the Treasurers report and the statement of account covering the financial affairs of the previous year.
      3. To elect Chairman, Officers and Members of the Committee for the following year.
      4. To elect an Honorary Auditor to verify the financial status of the Club.
      5. To fix the Annual Subscription for the coming year following submission of a Committee recommendation.
      6. Any other business that the Chairman of the AGM may seem fit.
    • Motions for the Annual General Meeting must be submitted in writing to the Honorary Secretary fourteen days before the date of the meeting.
    • Nominations for all Officer positions and for replacements for retiring ordinary members of the Committee shall be submitted in writing to the Honorary Secretary fourteen days before the time of the Annual General Meeting.
    • All nominations, proposals or motions for the Annual General meeting must be signed by both Proposer and Seconder, both of whom must be paid up members of the Club.

Although we have a written constitution, and try to stick to this as much as possible, Covid has forced us all to do things differently, so we will try and stay as closely as possible to the constitution but may be forced to be flexible in order to see the club and membership through this most unusual year.

The committee currently stands at

Rolf Buwert  Chairman, Christine Carson  treasurer, Sarah Burns secretary, Bill McCoskry, James Brown, Bryan Jardine, David Simpson,  and Mick Schofield voted onto committee taking on the role as competition secretary.

I will send all current members an email with the link to the Zoom AGM a few days before the 8th December.

It’s all about ‘Balance’ with this project; weight, symmetry, and technique… and that’s just making the Yoyo.

Then you need to become skilful in the operation of this fine work of art, but that’s another lesson entirely. There will be plenty of discussion and demonstration around technique, and getting the best finish possible straight from the tool.

So please join us for this fun and functional project. Create a fantastic gift for the festive season, and make someone special smile.

Please remember to let us know which country you will be joining us from with your RSVP.

November Competition

Nice selection of lidded boxes this month.

There are some with excellent shapes, some with excellent workmanship, and some with excellent choice of timbers.

The votes have been counted, and nobody has contested the numbers, or falsely claimed victory, no lawyers were involved and neither Senate nor Congress have got involved. The clear winner in the senior group is Colin Marshall and the novice is Steven Eccles. Well done guys.

Next months competition item is ‘A Present’, so a fairly wide brief. Can’t wait to see what folks come up with. Four weeks to produce something interesting. The next competition will also be the evening of the AGM, which has to be via Zoom. I will put out an email to everyone beforehand.

Annual Report 2020

Due to the Covid-19 crisis our AGM in October had to be cancelled, and we will probably reschedule to have a Zoom meeting on the 8th December.

Normally our subs (£35 per year) are due at the AGM, with members being ‘de-listed’ if not paid by 1st January. Of course this year is very different, and your membership fees have given you very little other than the knowledge that club facilities are still there, maintained, and available for general use as soon as we are permitted to return. A small number of the members have been able to return fairly recently for Turning Tuesdays and Turning Thursdays. The committee have decided that the annual membership need not be renewed until 31st December, and that for existing members it should be half price, namely £17.50 (although you would be permitted to pay the full membership if you want).

In the hope that we would be allowed greater access to the workshop in 2021 new members will be asked to pay the standard £35 annual fee.

Cheques made out to Galloway Woodturners can be sent to our treasurer at :

C.Carson, Galloway Woodturners, Slaethorn Croft, Holywood, Dumfries DG2 0QZ

or by BACS payment, Sort code – 800611, Account number 06003632, please make your name the reference so we know who has sent the payment.

Jimmy continues to run our wee shop, and we thank him for this valuable service to our members, and will open every Thursday evening  7pm to 9pm, but can also take orders by phoning him on 07720 746018. Orders can be delivered to your doorstep in a Covid secure way for any member between Newton Stewart and Lockerbie. Abrasives, sealer, waxes, pen kits etc are all in stock and other items up to lathes, special tools plus turning tools can be ordered through him.

Beginner’s courses can be done, but only on a one-to-one basis, as a whole day event and with all covid precautions in place. Courses are only for paid up members and cost £100.

It is very difficult for me to write anything about the current, and projected activities at the club because the governments can change things rapidly I feel it best to give you information about the Galloway Woodturners as it stands today, rather than say nothing and have you think we don’t care, or have gone away.

Galloway Woodturners are still very much alive and waiting to return to the workshop. Until then keep turning at home, submit your competition entries, vote for the entries and come to the workshops on Tuesday and Thursday evenings by phoning Bill on 01556 670556 or Jimmy on 07720 746018 to book a place, maximum of 5 places per session.

Although the Chairman’s Annual Report is normally presented at the AGM, this is not a normal year and I felt it appropriate to present it now, and maybe update it in December.

Christmas Markets

Following our monthly club competition, which had the theme “a Christmas Decoration” we maybe are inspired to make a few more, sell them, and make a couple of pounds to pay for our own Christmas shopping. With most Christmas markets closed or restricted I today received this timely message from Craig Martin, chairman of the Yellow Door Gallery (Queensberry Street, Dumfries).

Yellow Door Gallery & Shop Christmas Exhibition
5 November to 16 January 2020
This is a call to artists/makers (writers, jewellers, sculptors, weavers, turners, metalworkers etc) who are producing interesting and unusual work and gifts to apply to join us as Guest Members at The Yellow Door Gallery & Shop for our 2020 Christmas Show. Interested parties should contact us no later than 22 October at:
Email address: theyellowdoordumfries@gmail.com
Subject: Note of Interest Christmas Exhibition for the attention of Craig Martin
Providing: A description of their work and a selection of representative images.
NB: Guest Membership over the festive period will attract a commission rate of 40%, so we would ask for the pricing on submitted work to cover this – an enhanced Temporary Volunteer Member’s Commission rate of 20% is negotiable if Guest Members commit to volunteering to provide gallery cover for a minimum of two 5 hour sessions over the festive period.
We will be asking our exhibitors to submit electronic delivery notes by email prior to delivering their work. The information will include:
• Title/Item Description
• Medium
• Dimensions (2D Work & Sculpture)
• Price
All 2D work should be framed to a gallery standard, should have hanging fixings and be clearly labelled on the reverse.
Work for the Christmas Exhibition will be received on:
Saturday 31 October between 11am – 4pm
Monday 2 November between 11am – 1pm & 5:30pm – 6:30pm
Tuesday 3 November between 11am – 1pm & 5:30pm – 6:30pm
All applications to exhibit at the Yellow Door will be subject to selection by the Gallery Committee, therefore we cannot guarantee that everyone who applies will be invited to show their work. Accepted applicants will be subject to the conditions of membership as detailed on the Temporary Guest Membership Application Form that will be issued upon selection. There is no restriction on where the applicant is located so long as they can deliver their work on the receiving days/times and collect any unsold work at the end of the exhibition.
We look forward to hearing from you!”
