.Band saw – It has become obvious that members not used to using large band saws have been using the club saw. This has resulted in two of the bearing beings mangled at a cost of £20+! Band Saw

IMG_2001IMG_1999

Please note that the band saw is currently out of action. This is because of mistreatment by those using it!

Both of the rear support bearings have seized and have been damaged by excess pressure. From now on only those members who can satisfy the committee that they are competent in using the saw, and that includes how to strip down and set up the saw will be allowed to use it.

competitions

We hopefully have found the reason why the competition results have not been published – there was a glitch with the web site. This has hopefully been rectified and the results should now be available

Tuning a Platter or Plate (notes)

Wood blank about 280mm dia by 30mm (40mm if using tenon)

Mount on faceplate with short screws

  1. Bring wood to round and on the rim mark where to top of the plate will be.
  2. mark a line 8mm from the rim line just marked.
  3. Level up the bottom
  4. Decide on holding technique (recess or tenon) and form holding position.
  5. Mark the diameter of the base – as this is a plate or platter it needs to be bigger than the normal rule of thirds. In this case about 80% of the overall width. This will leave about 55mm for the outer edge.

6      Remove wood in a straight line from between the 2 lines (55mm line and 8mm line) – leave the lines don’t turn them away.

  1. Mark a line half way on this cut
  2. Create an ogee by cutting a slight concave on each side of the middle line.
  3. Shear cut a finish on the bottom then sand.

10     Reverse wood into jaws and clean the top surface down to the top line.

  1. Work out the width of the rim on this size about 30mm
  2. Begin to hollow but leaving enough wood to stabilise the cutting of the rim bead.

13     Work on the bead – true up the rim. Measure the rim thickness (should be about 5mm) Measure 5mm on the top edge of rim.

14     Start forming the bead – make a small v cut with the point of a skew at the 5m mark then using the skew as a scraper form the top of the bead then move the rest and finish rounding the bottom.  Tidy up the rim.

15     Continue hollowing to a thickness of about 5mm – Sand and finish

17     If using a tenon reverse the plate and remove the tenon – sand & finish.

June Notices

Tonight will be a demonstration by myself looking at turning a platter.

The competition tonight is a  Table Lamp (Shade recommended but not a requirement)

The wood of the month is Padauk  and Bryan Jardine has again drawn the short straw..

Next month- July- there is no club meeting although the normal Tuesday and Wednesday tuning will continue.

In August the Club night will be a question and answer evening with a small panel of “experts” taking your questions. Please come prepared with some interesting questions – about woodturning!

Professional Demonstration

The demonstration we had from Mick Hanbury last month was one of the best demonstrations we have had. Mick took us through various types of coloured work explaining to great effect the various steps involved (even Jake was impressed enough to buy some paint!!)  It was a great pity that attendance was low.

The next professional Demonstration is on September 24th with Simon Hope – Please support this event – get your tickets early and not at the last minute.

Master Classes

There is one place on the Simon Hope Master Class on Sunday September 25th. The cost for the class is £55 for the full day. If you would like to come to this please let me know asap – first come first served.

Approved Tutors

Rolf and myself took our AWGB Tutors Assessment last month and we were both awarded our Approved Tutors Award. We have no courses on at the present time although following the Spring Fling weekend we do have some enquiries.

Spring FlingWe had a reasonable time at the Spring Fling event at Kirkandrews with Rolf entertaining the crowds on his pole lathe. Sales of work brought in around £180 but this still has to be divided between the kirk and ourselves.

The next evet the club is involved in is the Kirkcudbright Country Fair on July 9th & 10th where will have stand and we will be demonstrating to the public. If you can help over the weekend please let David know – the more volunteers we can get to men the stall the easier it will be.

Roger.

May Notices

Sorry for the delay but below are the notices for May

Tonight We welcome back Chris Pouncey from Sorby demonstrating some of the latest Sorby tools and gadgets.  Chris will also be selling a range of Sorby tools, usually at a discounted rate. If you have ordered anything from Chris, please make sure you pick it up tonight.

The competition tonight is an item with off centre turning.

The wood of the month is Lignum Vitae (Bryan Jardine has volunteered).

As I have had my operation delayed the Club Programme will revert it its original form.

So next month will be me turning a platter.

The Competition Item will be a Table Lamp and the wood of the month Padauk (volunteer required)

On the 22nd of this month we have a  Professional Demonstration by Mick Hanbury from Lincolnshire.  Mick is a skilful and artistic woodturner who has been turning for over 20 years. He is listed on the Register of Professional Turners as well as being a member of Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. Over the years Mick has developed a unique style of decorative finishes to his pieces and is well known for his beautiful finial boxes, elegant spiral stem goblets, and delicately patterned platters.

Tickets are on sale from the shop – get yours Tonight

 Competition “Secretary”

Thank you to our new member Carl Burn who will be taking over the running of the competitions.  Jamie has had to stand down due to work commitments. Thanks also the Steve Dunn who also volunteered. It’s good to see members coming forward to take on rolls within the club.

 Master Classes

There is one place on the Simon Hope Master Class in September and also one left on the Nikos Siragas master Class in December

The cost for these classes is £55 for the full day. If you would like to come on any of these classes, please let me know asap – first come first served.

Spring FlingThis will be on 28th – 30th May and we will be taking part by having a sale of members items at Kirkandrews Kirk. Hopefully we will be demonstrating as well (weather permitting) Members are invited to attend over the weekend and provide support.

The Kirk will receive 20% of wood turners’ sales and the club 5%.

A catalogue of items and prices needs to be prepared so if members have any items they wish to sell they must be given to a member of the committee by the week before.

Spindle Turning Commision

I have just received the following e mail. If anyone wants to take this commission on please let me know and I will send pictures etc.

“Can You assist please?

We need spindles made for our (eight) kitchen chairs that have been chewed by puppies!

Not very glamourous or exciting but very necessary – can you suggest someone that could produce them please?

I can send examples and fit them myself if someone can produce them…..”
