October Club meeting and opportunities

A wee reminder that the Club meeting next Tuesday, 14 October, will start at 6.30pm so that we can have the Annual General Meeting  before the actual Club meeting.

As the Club continues to grow, so does the workload on the Committee. That, combined with the Secretary’s scheduled abscence for part of next year means that we need to do some devolution of our own and spread some jobs beyond the Committee.

We have identified the following ‘opportunities’ . . . . . . .

One Minutes Secretary to take Committee Meeting Minutes when Roger is absent.

One Membership person to help Phil J maintain the membership records.

One regular Commitee member to represent members views and interests.

One or two people to run the Club Shop, opening/closing, selling items to members, keeping an eye on stock levels then telling Roger what to order.

One or two people to take charge of Refreshments on Club nights and Turning Tuesdays, bringing the milk, buying coffee/tea/biscuits as required, keeping kitchen, mugs etc clean and tidy.

One or two people to take charge of our audio/visual kit, setting up the cameras and screens, microphone and speakers, and  acting as camera persons.

We will look to fill these positions during the AGM – please consider carefully how you can help your Club to prosper.

Help – ideas needed

We have a Committee Meeting on 7 October at which one of the items for discussion will be the Club programme for 2015. Some suggestions for the topics you would like to see covered would be very welcome.

You can contribute your ideas any way you choose, by email, phone, or in person to any Committee member.

Thank you in anticipation.

Dumfries Show

The Dumfries and Lockerbie Agricultural Show is this Saturday 2 August at the Showfield, Park Farm, Dumfries from 9am till 5pm. The Club will be there in the Craft Fayre tent selling your work, demonstrating, promoting the Club and generally waving the flag for woodturning.

Come and say Hello when you are at the Show.

Free Yew in Newton Stewart

I received an email and ‘phone call yesterday from a Roger Macdonald who was a friend of Club member David Wright. His email is self explanatory and is copied below.

He writes    ‘I am not a turner, but make natural wood sculptures. And have an eye for any pieces of interesting wood.

Last Saturday I went to Newton Stewart Museum, situated in an ex-church, in York Road. Some one had been cutting back SOME YEW TREES — SOME BRANCHES AROUND 6INS DIAMETER. When I asked what they were going to do with the branches, they said the Council were supposed to be collecting them, taking them to Stranraer, cut them up for firewood logs. All that will cost money. I reckon some of your club members could use the yew.’

If anyone is able to go and collect some or all of this wood, please let me know so that I can tell Roger.

P.S. I’d like a couple of big bits suitable for hollow forms.

Kirkcudbright Country Fair report

The Club had a successful couple of  days at the Fair. Judith and David represented the Club on Saturday, and the two Phil’s were there on the Sunday. 21 copies of our Programme were distributed and a few sheets for the new Taster session.

The raffle of the garden bench, donated by Lindsay Telfer, attracted a lot of attention and raised £188. Overall we took £348 gross; we have to pay a few expenses out of that.

We have ordered a set of display boards to replace the tatty bits of chipboard we have been using to date. We will re-do the display and present an improved image for the Club.

Kirkcudbright Country Fair

The Club will have a stand at the Fair, which is this weekend, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July. We will be demonstrating, selling your work, publicising the Club and generally waving the flag for woodturning. We will be running a raffle with a prize of a hardwood garden bench, worth nearly £300, generously donated by Lindsay Telfer.

The Fair is well worth a visit, even without the irrestistable attraction of Galloway Woodturners !!!

Report on events in May

The auction of woodworking tools and equipment went very well with only one lot remaining unsold. The auction raised a total of £1540, with the Club retaining our commission of £586 for Club funds. Thanks to everyone who bought items and to those who organised the sale, especially Judith and David who did most of the work.

Spring Fling weekend. The demo by Margaret Garrard was excellent; she showed us some involuted turning, some straightforward spindle and faceplate turning and the process of making one of her signature 2mm thick pierced and coloured bowls. Only 24 tickets were sold, however sales of wood and raffle tickets meant that we made a small profit overall.

The Watch, Try and Buy days were a new venture for us – we had no idea how they would go. Overall, we think they went pretty well; Sunday was much busier than Monday and although we were never mobbed with visitors there was a good buzz around the workshop. We recruited at least one new member. We took a total of about £350 from Have-a-go fees, sales of wood, sales of turning, and teas. The Committee met on the Tuesday immediately after the weekend to review how it went and note down the learning points for any future event. Again, thanks are due to everyone who helped to make the whole weekend a success.

June

We have taken delivery of a new Jet 1221VS lathe for you to play with and have also ordered a Sorby ProEdge Plus sharpening system. The lathe has the same spindle thread as the big Jet lathe so you can use the Evolution chuck on either. To give us maximum flexibility we have ordered 2 exerts so that we can use the Patriot or SuperNova chucks on either of the Jet lathes as well. We also have two face plate rings for the standard C jaws on the Evolution chuck, and a couple of clamps for positioning extractor hoses on a lathe. These purchases mean that we have pretty well spent our Lottery grant.

The topic for this month is a demo of making Mallets with Phil J.

The competition item is a plate for FOOD use. When marking an item you need to ask yourself – would I be happy to eat my dinner off this ?? For example – is the wood species known to be non-toxic, is it infected with fungi i.e. spalted, are there any cracks or features which could hold bugs, is the finish Food Safe ?

The Wood of the Month is Yew.

The first of  Roger’s have-a-go sessions for a local Scout troop was last Thursday, with two more scheduled. It went well, woggles and a pen were made and we have heard good reports.

July

Note that there is NO Club meeting in July. Turning Tuesdays will continue.

And finally . . .

A couple of dates for your diaries . . . .

Saturday 12, Sunday 13 July the Club will be at the Kirkcudbright Country Fair.

Saturday 2 August we will be at the Dumfries Show.

Volunteers to help at either event would be welcome.

When Phil J enabled the Register feature on the web site it was immediately hacked and loads of spurious registrations made, so it had to be disabled again. Phil has registered everyone for whom we have an email address and you should be receiving emails from the site. If you have an email address and haven’t received emails from the Club site recently, please speak to Phil J.

We are going to offer a Taster session for any one who wants to try woodturning, details are on our web site on the new Courses page. These will be held along side Project Mondays, which will start on Monday August 4.

Would you be interested in seeing a demo of the Kel McNaughton Bowl Saving system, probably as part of a Turning Tuesday ? If enough people are interested we’ll fix a date and post it on the web site.

A reminder that we have an extra Tuesday meeting in September, Nick Arnull will be demonstrating on the 23rd, 7-9pm. Tickets are available tonight, price £5. Nick will also be teaching a masterclass that day, 10am-4pm, price £75. This is a great opportunity to work with a highly regarded turner and get an injection of new ideas into your turning right on your doorstep. Otherwise to work with Nick you could always go to his place in Norwich ! Contact Roger Cutler to book a place.

Border Woodturners are hosting a demo by Irish woodturner Eugene Grimley on Sunday 22 June. Eugene is the Vice Chair of the Irish Woodturners Guild and will be demonstrating pieces that the average turner can make. The cost is usually £6, with lunch available for £2.

Notices May 2014

Tonight we welcome Chris Pouncy from Robert Sorby who will demonstrate their latest ‘goodies’ and try to persuade us that we really need them ! If you asked Roger to place an order for you, you should be able to collect it from Chris during break.

The competition item is ‘Any item of your choice’ and the Wood of the Month is Sycamore.

As you will know by now, we have the entire contents of a life long woodworker’s workshop For Sale. Information on the 67 lots and how to view and bid have been circulated by email and are on the Club web site. Note that bidding closes at 8pm on Tuesday 20 May. Successful bidders pay for their lots then and may remove goods. We need all purchased goods removed by Friday 23rd as we need to get set up for the weekend.

Only a couple of weeks until our major event of the year over the Spring Fling weekend. We have an advert for this in the Spring Fling brochure (20,000 copies) and in the May edition of The Bulletin which is delivered to every address in the Stewartry (12,730 copies).

Saturday 24 May. Full day demo by famous artistic turner Margaret Garrard. Tickets are available tonight from Phil J, £10 each including lunch and tea/coffee etc during breaks. Copies of the poster have been circulated by email featuring one of her superb pierced bowls. Extra copies are available tonight, at least display one in your car window.

Sunday 25 May, Monday 26 May. Watch, try and buy.  This is for the public to come and see what woodturning is about, for us to recruit new members, and make some money. We are planning . . . .

Demonstrations by Club members.

Have-a-go sessions, buy a piece of wood for £1 or £2 and make a bud vase or tea light holder, guided by an experienced turner. Everything provided.

Make a wooden ball point pen for £5, again with a bit of help.

Exhibition and Sale of Members work.

Display and information about the club.

A raffle on each of Sunday and Monday.

Tea/coffee and traybake available all day for £1.50.

There are still plenty of opportunities for YOU to help. If you can only come for half of one of the days, that’s fine as we have split each day into morning and afternoon sessions. We’ll pass the clipboard around so that you can add your name.

We would appreciate some donations of home baking – please let David S know what and how many portions you can contribute.

We will need a few nice pieces to create a small exhibition of work; and lots of pieces to sell. These you can either donate all the proceeds to the Club, or we can sell on your behalf with the Club taking just a 20% commission. Everyone should be able to make at least one piece – exactly what is up to you. That way we should get a good range of items.

There should be an article and picture about our Lottery grant in Woodturning magazine, issue 267.

June

The topic for the June meeting is a demo of making Mallets with Phil J. The competition item is a plate for FOOD use – think about the implications of this. The Wood of the Month is Yew

Roger is organising some have-a-go sessions for a local Scout troop in June, the dates are Thursday 5, 12 and 19. He has a few volunteer tutors but could use more. If you can help, please contact Roger.

And finally . . .

A couple of dates for your diaries . . . .

Saturday 12, Sunday 13 July the Club will be at the Kirkcudbright Country Fair.

Saturday 2 August we will be at the Dumfries Show.

Volunteers to help at either event would be welcome.

We keep in touch with many of you by email which means that Roger has been maintaining distribution lists and Phil J has been keeping a list of paid up members. This duplication of lists has caused extra work and confusion over who has THE list of members. We have a web site that enables us to put information on the site and the site will automatically email registered users that new info. is available. In future we will use this facility and Roger will NOT send out emails or maintain distribution lists.

This means that if you want to continue to receive info. about the Club YOU NEED TO REGISTER ON OUR WEB SITE. This is a very simple two minute task – all you need to enter is your name and email address, and to specify a password.

We want to give members more opportunity to use the Workshop so we are going to open on Monday evenings as well as Tuesday, starting from Monday August 4.

Roger has been working on the programme of professional demos for next year; possible names are Nikos Siragas, Sue Harker, Philip Greenwood and Dave Atkinson. This year the attendance at the first demo was good but the attendance at the second, by Andrew Hall, was considerably less. It costs at least £300 to bring a professional to Galloway therefore we need to sell 30 tickets to cover this cost. If members are not interested in professional demos then the Club will not waste time, effort and money by arranging them.

By show of hands a large majority of members pledged to support a programme of professional demos next year.

The Club has bought 3 face plate rings (to fit both the Patriot and SuperNova chucks), a bowl caliper and  a vessel caliper from Robert Sorby. The other jaw sets for our Evolution chuck (for the big Jet lathe) have arrived – 114mm Piranha jaws and O’Donnell jaws. We now have a good range of jaws for our chucks which will enable members to tackle a wide range of projects.

Workshop sale notes

We have the entire contents of a life long woodworker’s workshop For Sale. The Club is organising the sale and will retain a commission for Club funds on everything sold.
