Advice for complete novice

Hi guys,
I only started in Sept 2023 and don’t have a lathe at home nor any tools or other equipment. Can somebody suggest a beginners’ list of essentials to get started at home? And costs? And from where I should (and shouldn’t buy). And any other advice gratefully received…
Thanks,
Dave.

  1. Here is a few things I would suggest,
    * The Ashley Iles beginners set of tools, like the ones at the club.
    * A face shield and a dust mask.
    * Castelated / Steb centres (live and drive)
    * A chuck set, i.e. the chuck (M33 with adapter to your lathe) and three or four different jaws (Charnwood and Record do reasonable sets)
You don’t need anything else to begin with.
Axminster tools are a good source for everything you need if buying off the internet, they are never too cheap and never too expensive. Jimmy, at our own wee shop can also get just about anything you want, and he sources his stuff from Biven’s, again fair prices. If you are going to Harrogate then everything is on sale there and it is a great place for seeing everything in the one place. I used to go with a small rucksack and £200 in cash to Harrogate, when the rucksack was full, or I had no cash left, I would stop shopping (I don’t do that anymore as I have EVERYTHING). Harrogate costs are much the same as normal (but you don’t pay postage)
Check the prices on the internet as they may have changed recently.
