My high score is 8 and my low score is 5 my average is 5.2 (I was never very good at averages either)

hi, when i was at school and highers if you only have averages then the average gets lower each time, but iam not happy with some of the scoreing it never seems to tally up here, we will have to work out a new system. jake

sorry David that was my error the low was in your case 5 not 7. I have checked through the other scores and they seem correct to me.
The average is calculated by adding up the numbers given on the score sheets and then dividing that by the number of times marks are awarded which gives a mean (one type of average).
If anyone would like me to use the mode or median method (or some other method) then please let me know and provided everyone agrees the method I would be happy to do so.
As of September’s competition I will post the raw marks for each piece with them so that folks can tally up themselves and if anyone is not happy then we can correct things where necessary.
