April 2020 Competition: A Time Piece

Dear All,

Next Tuesday, 14th April, we should have been at the workshop for the April 2020 Club meeting.  Steve was to have demonstrated “An Egg Box” and the Club competition was to have been “A Time Piece”.

We all understand why we cannot be there for the event BUT we could go ahead with a virtual competition by submitting photos of those pieces we would have wished to enter.  I hope we are all still turning in our workshops whilst still maintaining our social isolation ~ even if only to get out of the house for a while!  A competitive element might spur us on.

What do you think? Would you be prepared to join in?

We could ask Mike to advise on how best to judge such a competition and publish the results.  Then, when life has returned to normal, we could bring in those items for which we have submitted photos to the next Club meeting and hold a retrospective competition.

I attach a couple of photos of two of my clocks as my proposed entry for the April event.  They were made from a Yew branch turned propeller-wise before being halved and the clock mechanisms inserted.

Look after yourself and your family and keep turning.

Best wishes,

David

Wednesday Afternoon Workshop Opening, 1.00 – 3.00pm

Dear All,

In view of the current situation, I will open the workshop on Wednesday 18th March from 1.00 – 3.00pm this week for the last time until the current Covid 19 crisis is over.

I will be happy and pleased to resume opening once we all feel it is safe to do so.

Do keep turning in your own workshops, (we all need the practice), and please keep an eye on the club website for notice of when Wednesday afternoon openings will start again.

Look after yourselves and keep well.

Best wishes

Notes regarding Rick Dobney’s demonstration

In response to a question posed to me by a member at the last club meeting, please be aware that Rick Dobney’s notes about those subjects he covered in his recent demonstration at the club, i.e.

  • Square box turned on a jig,
  • Aluminium stemmed goblet
  • Multi axis candlestick

Are available on the club website under “Library” then “Projects.”

Cheers,

David

Christmas bauble making workshop ~ an opportunity to share experiences.

Saturday 14th September 10.00 to 16.00

David Simpson is leading a workshop on the making Christmas baubles like the ones demonstrated by Emma Cook, (the Tiny Turner).

If you’re thinking of having a go at making these baubles or have already made a start and would like to give/receive encouragement to/from others please come along with your components.

A limited number of components will be available at £2.50 per bauble if you do not already have some.

As Rolf has said about such workshops, “they are not courses but workshops where we all learn from each other in an environment free from distractions.”

I am sure we will all leave the workshop with at least one bauble.

There are 5 places available at a fee of £10 for club funds.

Message from Rick Dobney

Thank you once again for a most enjoyable weekend at Galloway Woodturners, topped off by a return last night to see Colwin’s excellent demonstration.

As promised, attached are the turning notes for the three projects I presented on the day, please share these with the club membership.

The 6063T6 grade aluminium is readily available off eBay, see for example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/22mm-7-8-Aluminium-Round-Bar-Rod-Grade-6063T6-1-Metre/331005711662?epid=3012640447&hash=item4d117a552e:g:G3sAAMXQ01tRQP42

The Collect chuck I mentioned in the demonstration (but didn’t need to use) for reversing the stem is available from numerous places, an example from RDG tools is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RDGTOOLS-2MT-ER20-COLLET-CHUCK-SPANNER-SET-IN-ONE-BOX-MILLING-ENGINEERING-MYFORD/351762125364?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

The Molyslip MCC cutting compound is again available from numerous sources, an eBay example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Molyslip-MCC-Moly-Cutting-Tapping-compound-drilling-broaching-threading-RDG/291785492445?epid=1850573085&hash=item43efc547dd:g:XFcAAOSwQupXVsqQ

I’d be delighted to see examples any of the club members work inspired by my demonstration and with their permission I’d like to post them on my website. If there are any questions or points needing clarifying from the projects then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I will try to mount the turning notes as soon as possible.  David
