February
The competition item this month is any one of the items demonstrated last month. Someone, I think it was David Simpson (apologies if it wasn’t), suggested that rather than have a marks sheet for each entry, each member could have a personal marks sheet. This seems a good idea, so we will introduce personal marks sheets from this month.
The topic for tonight is ‘I don’t do design’.
An update on the new workshop project. Following your endorsement of the project, the Committee has been busy working to get it up and running. Our ‘lease’ on the premises runs from 1st February so we have started work on site. We circulated the Action Plan and a Wants List to members by email, and a number of members have contributed items – thanks to everyone. An updated Wants List is on the bar. We acquired a load of stuff from D&G Council surplus stock – chairs, workbenches and tables – thanks to Steve and Phil J for finding out about this source.
A great group of members spent last week’s Turning Tuesday working on the workshop. We broke up one of the workbenches and used the wood to repair two other benches; thanks to Chick and his helpers. A fine example of British design and craftsmanship now spans the chasm above the demonstration lathe to carry electric cable and the camera. It bears an uncanny resemblance to a camel – having been designed and built by committee !
Turning Tuesday from next week, February 19, onwards will be at the new workshop. The premises are near to Irving’s Bakery, just North of the town, off the A713 Ayr road. Directions – from A75 turn onto the A713 heading North (out of town towards Ayr). Turn almost immediately Right, signed ‘Re-cycling Centre’. Turn Right into the first entrance after the road to the bakery. There are a few maps on the bar if you need one.
At the close of tonight’s meeting we will transfer all our stuff from here to the workshop.

The competition item next month is your interpretation of a Greek urn, which should make for some interesting entries.
The topic next month is a demo of making a Pepper Mill and a chat about the AWGB from Dave Grainger.
Club meetings from March onwards will be at the new workshop.
And finally . . .
The Shop has a few ready to turn blanks for you to buy. Very reasonably priced, much less than any woodturning supply store and all proceeds go to the Club – we need every penny. The ash is fairly dry, the spalted beech and elm is wet, so treat them accordingly.
In the workshop, you will see an area labelled – ‘Please help yourshelf’. If you have something that you no longer need, bring it along and put it on the shelf. If you can use something on the shelf, please ‘help yourshelf’ and put a donation into the tin or give it to the Treasurer.
Now we have our new workshop – what do you want to do with it apart from holding this meeting there ? A few ideas for you to consider :-
run Turning Tuesday in the afternoon for the retired folks
then in the evening for the workers
occasional workshops on topics suggested by members, daytime, evening or Sat/Sun, your choice
run a session on the Saturday after a Club meeting to follow up on whatever was demonstrated
a public Open Day
public Have-a-go day
project sessions where several people work together on a project, possibly one that they may not feel confident to tackle alone. Suggested by Judith who would be willing to nominate the first project, probably something covered in Woodturning magazine.
Or something else – please let us have your views and ideas to any Committee member.
A date for your diaries – on Friday 15 November we will be hosting a Demo by Nikos Siragas, the well known turner from Crete. More details a bit nearer the time.
We are working with Border Woodturners and other clubs to bring you demos by a number of professional turners next year – watch this space.
